The language spoken in Amsterdam is Dutch which is the country’s national language. Some people familiar with other European languages may recognize some of the words or even find learning the language quite easily.
I had a friend a few years ago who was interested in learning Dutch so he could speak with other locals when he visited Amsterdam. He spent a bit of time finding Dutch based websites and Dutch friends and soon enough he became pretty fluent.
Not the hardest language in the world to learn to speak and write, although i myself haven’t managed it. (I can’t say i’ve tried enough). My girl would love to learn it though, she feels we could strike up some better bargains in the country if we could at least speak to some of the locals (Although lets be honest. Many people from Holland already speak English.) It’s still no reason to be ignorant of the locals, especially if you intend to become a repeat visitor.
I suppose the advantage of being able to speak Dutch in Amsterdam, Is that you can always understand what others are saying. An added benefit for people who enjoy eavesdropping.
So if someone asks you “What language is spoken in Amsterdam” you can tell them the answer. Or if your one of the people wondering what language is spoken in Amsterdam. Now you know and can enjoy learning Dutch.

The language may be known to us Brits as Dutch, but I once had it explained to me by a local that they prefer it to be called netherlanden, as dutch sounds to much like their least favourite people (I.E the Germans – Deutsch)
