Phone boxes

While in Amsterdam, you may find the need to communicate with people over the telephone.  If you haven’t taken your own mobile / cell phone, then you’ll be keeping an eye out and possibly wondering how to use the phone boxes in Amsterdam.

First of all you need to find and realize that what your looking at is in fact a phone box.  Their slim bright green appearance make them recognizable from quite a distance.  There’s loads of them outside of central station, the airport and other transportation buildings, take a glimpse as you walk by them.

Now to work the thing……

All of the phone boxes on the streets of Amsterdam take phone cards,  these can easily be bought from a number of shops, post offices, supermarkets and newsagents.

Some of the phone boxes even take credit cards / debit cards.  If you want to stay on the safe side then pick up a phone card,  Otherwise just use your credit card like you would the phonecard.

The phones themselves are pretty straight forward, put in the card and then dial your number.  Instructions on how to use the phone boxes are in both English and Dutch to save any confusion, should you even have any problems.

If you’d rather use the internet in Amsterdam to let people know your ok, then there are plenty of places to help you get online for a small fee, or even for free if you head towards the library.
