Damstraat is a narrow but extremely busy street in Amsterdam. With a narrow path on either side and a narrow one way street into Dam Square, be sure to keep your wits about you and not wander into the road by mistake. The cyclists will either run you over or you’ll anger a bunch of them as they try to get to where their going.
There are shops everywhere on Damstraat. Ranging from gift shops and restaurants. To the Pharmacy and cheese shop.
As you walk up Damstraat you’ll have a restaurant on the left and a pharmacy on the right. The Pharmacy is the second shop on Damstraat and its good to know where you can go for medical advice or grab something to soothe that sore throat.
If walk up Damstraat, on the left you’ll see a pizza place called Pizza Slices. For just a few Euros you can make a selection from the pizzas on offer and have it heated up and hot ready to fill your hunger.
Directly opposite Pizza slices you’ll find Rene’s Croissants. This place has the most amazing cakes and bakery items you could ever dream of. They appear to open for most of the day. We grabbed some croissants from there for breakfast. And my friend grabbed some apple turnovers in the early evening that appeared to be just as fresh. There’s also a chipsy king opposite. Serving chips and mayo for just a couple of Euros.
As you walk further up Damstraat. You’ll see coffeeshops, headshops, restaurants, souvenir shops and every other kind of shop you can imagine. The cheese shop is a good place to visit if your feeling like an adventure in the world of cheese.
You’ll also spot the canal that leads many visitors into the red light district. Once you head over a canal bearing the name Oudezijds Voorburgwal then you’ve come to the red light district.
If you walk past this canal, you’ll find that the crowds start to filter out quite a bit. Thats mainly due to the red light district taking many of them, and the coffeeshops on the streets taking the rest. Some of these shops have much better prices than earlier on in Damstraat.
