Our Amsterdam Holidays

Theres lots of things about Amsterdam that tourists will never know, that is unless they did a fair amount of research and came up with the answers to their specific questions.  Amsterdam is full of history and little facts that the average tourist won’t in a million years guess.

But in just 5 minutes you can astound people you meet whilst on holiday in Amsterdam with these little known facts.

Out of all the canal boats that people live in the city, there is only one that is home to upto 70 cats.  The poezenboot, was set up by a woman over 40 years ago who had a passion for re-housing cats. It’s now run by a charity and voluteers that look after the state of the boat, as well as the cats.

Amsterdam has no parliament building. Despite being the largest city in the Netherlands and the official capital of the country. Amsterdam has no government buildings to conduct its business. Instead all government operations happen at The Hague.

The name Amsterdam comes from a joint event.  The ‘Amste’ part is from the river Amstel where a ‘Dam’ was orignally formed. This created Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is home to over 600,000 bikes, over 1,200 bridges,150 canals and more than 250 trams. Parking in the city centre is almost impossible. It’s no surprise that bikes are the main form of transport here.

If/when global warming takes a hold on the planet. Amsterdam will be one of the first global cities to disappear below the water level.  Mostly due to the fact that Amsterdam itself is scarily close to sea level as it is, being flat doesn’t help much either.

There are more museums in Amsterdam than anywhere else in the world.  There’s a museum around just about every corner and something for everyone. For those who enjoy fine art and artistic creations. To those who want to know how cannabis is made and all the history behind the sex trade in Amsterdam.
