Taking children to Amsterdam is a good idea for any family in my opinion. There’s so much to see and plenty for the children to do that a holiday in Amsterdam can soon become an educational break and a holiday all in one.
A few tips to keep your trip pleasant and make sure your prepared for whats needed when it comes to taking children with you to Amsterdam can be found below.
Tips for when you take children with you to Amsterdam:
Pushchairs: Pushing a pushchair round the cobbled streets of Amsterdam is a nightmare at the best of times. Cobbles are everywhere and streets are often too narrow to fit a pushchair on. (Unless your on the main streets of course.) A sling or baby pouch is a better choice and makes getting around easier. No need to worry about trams or the cobbles when your baby is safely strapped to the front of you. Also many museums have banned pushchairs, so if your planning on a museum visit with a pushchair, don’t be surprised if your turned away.
Restaurants: When in Amsterdam with children, it’s good to note that some of the more up class restaurants won’t allow you to take the children in with you. What they expect you to do with them is anyones guess. If the restaurant your looking at visiting doesn’t seem like it allows children, Just ask. They’ll let you know straight away what their policies are and if your ok. Don’t be disheartened, there are plenty of places that do allow children. Especially the Kinderkookkafe near the Waterlooplein.
Activities & Things to do: We put together a quick list of things for children to do other than visiting all the museums and spending hours at just the parks. There are many things to do in Amsterdam that children will find fascinating and you may even end up learning a thing or two yourself.
Places to avoid: Obvious places to avoid with children in Amsterdam are the various Red light districts in the city as well as main areas for people who want to visit the coffee shops the city has many of. Heading out of the city centre and towards the Leidseplein,Vondelpark and even Amstel often reveal little treasures many tourists don’t notice.
Shopping for children: Need to do some shopping for the children while your in Amsterdam? Well there’s several shops dedicated to various items of childrens clothing as well as gifts especially for children. Everything from fashionable clothing items, to extremely cool kids toys can all be found in Amsterdam. Who wants a wooden doll’s house when you can purchase a wooden canal house?
