Cars

Getting around the centre of Amsterdam in a car is not advised.  It’s not because you may not be used to the road system in a different country, It’s more a case of once you get your car into the city centre. There’s absolutely no where to park it.

Rush hours become hectic and drivers get angry with not being able to move around freely. After all, Amsterdam wasn’t really designed to be driven around like the rest of the worlds Capitals.

This is undoubtedly the reason that most Amsterdammers opt for bike travel or hopping on and off of the trams that frequent popular areas as well as areas which are further afield.  No point driving your car into the the centre of Amsterdam, only to find out you have to park 7 blocks away from where you want to be.  Taking the tram is less hassle, cheaper and will certainly help you remain sane whilst on holiday.

Renting a car in Amsterdam is useful if your plans include travelling further afield of the city centre. Places such as Eindhoven as well as other cities and towns are easily reached by car and have a better chance of you being able to park it.

If your plans don’t include trips into the countryside or seeing the other towns in the Netherlands. Your probably better off sticking to foot, tram or bike travel.
