Buying soft drugs in Amsterdam is and has been legal for a long time. Nobody thinks any worse of you when leaving a smokey coffeeshop at midnight with red eyes. Which if your like us, is an extremely good thing indeed.
Unlike the UK and many other countries, cannabis is sold over the counter at all the coffee shops in Amsterdam. So whether you fancy a nice relaxing smoke, or something a bit more trippy like mushrooms. Amsterdam has it all, and its all legal!
Coffee shops are permitted to sell cannabis to their customers. Usually, cannabis is for sale in 1 gram and 5 gram quantities. With 5 Gram being the maximum a coffee shop is allowed to sell. That doesn’t mean they won’t sell you more. It just means they can’t sell you an Ounce of your favourite bud all in one go. However, you may notice that some coffee shops don’t stick to the regular 1 and 5 gram servings, they may have weights such as 1.1 g or something similiar.
The general rules are that if you intend to smoke in a coffee shop, you should at least be prepared to either buy a drink or something to eat (If your wanting more weed, then thats a bigger bonus). So don’t be thinking you can just sit in a coffee shop you haven’t bought anything from. You wouldn’t go into a cafe and eat a sandwich you made at home would you?
The atmosphere within the coffee shops changes from place to place. Just like any bar or pub, some may suit you. Some may not. If you don’t like the one your in for whatever reason. (Music sucks, Other customers are loud or too quiet for your liking.) Simply find another one or go back to one you enjoyed earlier.
As drugs in Amsterdam are easy to come by, it’s no surprise that not all ‘Cafes’ allow you to smoke in them. It’s a common misconception that because drugs in Amsterdam are legal, that you can smoke where you like. Take note, ‘cafes’ are the same as cafes all over the world. THey serve coffee and food. Coffee shops however are exactly what your looking for if your wanting to smoke some of the local herbs.
If your around the red light district, make sure you take precautions and try and keep away from the dealers who offer harder drugs.
