There are several churches that can be found in Amsterdam but only one stands above the rest. The Oude Kerk, also known as the Old Church, is the oldest in the city of Amsterdam. It can be found proudly standing at the De Wallen – a tourist destination and known for being the red light district.
The façade of the Oude Kerk has already undergone several renovations even before the 15th century came. During the 13th century, the original wooden chapel was replaced with stone halls. Afterwards, a hall church with three aisles was built. And because of these renovations, the size of the Oude Kerk increased year after year.
On the other hand, the tower is a collaboration of Gothic and Renaissance style. It used to be a leaning tower until Joost Jansz Bilhamer remedied the problem as he integrated a stone jacket during the 1700’s.
The floor of the Oude Kerk is fascinating. One may see that it was actually made from gravestones. This is because the old church was built on the cemetery where locals of Amsterdam remained buried until 1865.
The Oude Kerk used to be a place where people just gossip, selling commodities, and shelter for the homeless. As of the moment, it is now the center of Amsterdam’s cultural as well as religious activities. One may even get to rent the place for presentations, dinner parties, and receptions. Prestigious events were also hosted here from time to time including the infamous World Press Photo ceremony happening in Amsterdam every year.
