Tram Info:
Trams 1,2,5 and 14 visit the Dam Square/Paleisstraat and Trams 1,2,5,13,14 and 17 stop at the Dam Square/Raadhuisstraat junction.
Dam Square is a historical part of Amsterdam and can be found at the end of a 5 minute walk from Centraal Station. Dam Square is built on the original site of the old Dam that was built around 1270 to prevent the city from being flooded by the Zuiderzee sea.
The square itself has plenty of history as well as great historic buildings such as the Royal Palace which is considered one of the main sights to see at the square. Other things to check out in Dam Square are Madame Tussauds, The new church and the huge phallic shaped statue as well as a number of restaurants and cafes.
Be aware that the square is one hell of a busy place with just about every seat at every cafe, restaurant and bar taken. Don’t be surprised if you have to wait around to grab a seat.
Dam square has year round entertainment happening. Whether its a cool spring carnival with big wheels and stalls. Or a bright and shiny sunny day in summer when the street performers come out to entertain. There is always something going on.
The square is surrounded by hotels and just about any kind of shop you can imagine. Including the Amsterdam diamond centre.
The only people not waiting for seats around here, are the pigeons. (And they aren’t really people, although some may be visitors to Amsterdam.)
