The Plantage area of Amsterdam can be found in the North East of the city, Originally filled with lush green parks and parkland, The Plantage was a popular place for 17th Century Amsterdammers to hang out and relax, often spending many hours in the green surroundings.
Around 1848, the Plantage became one of Amsterdam’s first suburbs, the large green areas of the Plantage enabled expansion for housing, bringing even more residents to this north eastern quarter of Amsterdam. During the expansion, the area became a popular place to live, and things haven’t changed over the last 150 years as it’s still a popular area of Amsterdam to live in.
In the 19th Century, the area became particularly popular with middle class Jews, many of whom set up their homes and businesses here. Most of these 19th century occupants joined the Diamond cutting industry and helped form a huge part of the diamonds workers union.
In modern day Amsterdam, the Plantage is home to many popular attractions and things to do, as well as places to visit. The Artis Zoo can be found here along with the Scheepvaartmuseum and an enjoyable walk or a bite to eat can be found along the Entrepotdok which was once part of the biggest warehouse developments in Europe.
If your in the mood for windmill spotting, then your in luck as the Plantage houses one of the last six remaining windmills in central Amsterdam. The De Gooyer windmill can be spotted from the Werf ‘t Kromhout. Restored to bring back the original feel of this historic landmark.
The Artis Zoo takes up the most space and is possibly the biggest attraction in the area for families and anyone who loves animals (Isn’t that everyone?
). The various parts of the Artis Zoo make it a day long experience with places to eat and so many species of animals and plants that you may find yourself going back for more another day.
Other sights to see while in this part of Amsterdam are the National Vaksbondmuseum which is a small yet modest museum covering the history of the Dutch trade movement.
Trams running to this part of the city are : 6,9 & 14 which all stop close to the Artis Zoo.
