Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter or the Museumplein part of the city, is one of the more recent additions to Amsterdam’s historic areas. Originally the Museum Quarter was made up of small holding businesses and small farms. Because of this, the council chose the area as a place for art and culture to be developed. At around this time plans for the Concertgebouw,Stedelijk Museum and the Rijksmuseum.
Once the plans for the new cultural and artistic buildings were drawn up, the area was transformed into the cultural centre of the city. The Concerthall brought some of the best acoustics in the world, while the museums brought cultural diversity and history to the city and especially the area.
The Museumplein has memorials to the victims of the Second World War. Not just one but two can be found in the museumplein, a great place in the warmer months to relax and grab a bite to eat from one of the many eateries that surround this busy area.
Streets in the museumplein are mostly named after artists and other people of importance that Amsterdam was once home to.
If museums aren’t your thing and you find yourself in the museumplein wondering what to do, then the Vondelpark makes a refreshing change of sights and feeling as you enjoy a walk around it’s huge grounds. In the winter months, the pond at the Museumplein is often available for people to skate on.
