Areas of Amsterdam

Amsterdam may not be the largest of capital cities in the world, but it’s one of them that’s packed so full of culture, things to do,sights to be seen and amazing walks that just about anyone visiting Amsterdam could enjoy.

To make things easier, the city is divided up into 5 main sections.  Not to be confused with Amsterdam’s neighbourhoods which are official areas within the city.  Splitting the city into areas makes it easier to explain where things are and how to get to them.

Each part of the city holds it’s own sights and events, as well as different types of entertainment.  Once you know what your most interested in seeing, you ‘ll be able to head over to the area of interest to you.  Saving time and money on travelling between areas only to end up there again later on.

The main areas of Amsterdam, or at least the main parts of Amsterdam with the most going on can be found below :

Oude Zijde
Nieuwe Zijde
Central Canal Ring
Eastern Canal Ring
Western Canal Ring
Plantage
Museum Quarter

There are of course other areas of Amsterdam that aren’t mentioned here, but have equally attractive events happening there.  Feel free to check out the various events pages and things to do in Amsterdam pages. (10 Things to do in Amsterdam)

Travelling between the different areas of Amsterdam can be done in a number of ways.  A popular choice is the tram systems which at first glance appear to travel everywhere within the city centre.   Depending on which area you wish to visit, travelling by canal boat or even walking is always an option, as is renting a bicycle and taking to the streets Amsterdam style.
