Zwanenburgwal

To the east of the Waterlooplein is the Zwanenburgwal, part street and part canal, the Zwanenburgwal was once named the most beautiful street in Amsterdam by readers of the locally published Het Parool (2006).

Not only is this canal a street (or this street a canal) but Rembrandt once lived here along with the philospher Spinoza, making it of particluar interest to anyone that loves art or philosphy.

Running from the Sint Antoniesbreestraat sluice gate to the Amstel river, the Zwanenburgwal has many sights of particular interest along it’s canal banks.  The Waterlooplein market known for haggling and visitors trying to cut down on prices is along it’s banks, as well as the Stopera opera house.  Travelling further along it’s banks you’ll come across the Joods Verzetsmonument, erected in 1988 in rememberance of the Jewish resistance that occurred here during the second World war.

The Zwanenburgwal is within the 4 main canals (Singel,Herengracht,Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht), and located in the Jewish part of the city.

Areas of interest nearby to the Zwanenburgwal :

Rembrandthuis – House of Rembrandt
Waterlooplein – Flea market with rooom for haggling.
Sint Antoniesluis – Sluice gate that created the Zwanenburgwal
Zuiderkerk is just five minutes north of the canal
The Amstel River with the Blauwbrug
