The Brouwersgracht is the northern border of the Grachtengordel (Canal ring) and connects the Singel,Herengracht,Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht together.
Taking it’s name from the businesses that once thrived here, the Brewers canal (Brouwersgracht) was once lined with all types of breweries, many of which were huge grand buildings of historical and architectural. Sadly many have been demolished or redeveloped and replaced with warehouse style apartments. The gables of the buildings that are left from when the canal was used originally for brewing can still be seen on what original buildings remain.
As it connects the main canals of the canal ring, the Brouwersgracht is a picturesque and scenic part of Amsterdam worth taking the time to visit, especially if your already at the north end of the canal ring or about to start enjoying a peaceful walk along the canals.
Although the Brouwersgracht may be the northern border of the Canal ring, it extends further to the west than the canal ring itself. Work started here in 1614 as planning for the canal ring was finished and the work undertaken by local builders.
