When attractions become distractions in Amsterdam

December 4th, 2009 · No Comments

Amsterdam in the early evening

With our recent post of how Amsterdam was named in the top 10 places for pickpockets.  I thought it might be helpful or at least eye opening to think of some of the places and some of the attractions pickpocketing may be more likely to happen then you’d think.

With the early evenings at this time of year, there’s plenty of places lit up in Amsterdam that deserve some attention when viewing the sights.  Just make sure that while your taking in the beautiful surroundings the city has,  that someone else is’nt helping themselves to your valuables.

Amsterdams red light districtThe main Red Light District in Amsterdam is frequented by millions of visitors every year.  Each one taking a peek at the girls inside the windows.  The narrow walkway and the even narrower alleyways that run round this area often have people bumping into each other just to pass.  Ideal for anyone wanting to help themselves.

Central Station - Amsterdams transportation hubPublic transport offers a quick getaway for the criminal whilst leaving the average tourist wondering where the thief took off to.  The confined spaces while travelling, combined with the boarding and alighting stations.  Make bumping into people inevitable.

The Nationaal Monument in Dam Square. If your in some of the busy tourist areas looking up at the amazing historic architecture of Amsterdam.  Then beware of your pockets.  If your too distracted by your surroundings you might not feel that hand slip into your pocket or bag.

When visiting some of the many museums or theatres that Amsterdam has, queueing is going to happen, especially at some of the more popular attractions. Keep an eye on yourself and your travel buddys.

The narrow streets of AmsterdamVisiting markets is a great way to pick up a bargain or two.  Plenty of items for sale and lots of customers wanting to buy something just out of reach.  As with anywhere that has a high volume of people. Pickpockets hide among the crowds.  Try not to flash your cash too much when buying something or that souvenir may end up costing more than you thought.

Staying vigilant while on holiday isn’t as bad as it sounds.  Just being aware of whats going on around you can often be enough to deter most pickpockets. and of course if the worst does happen. Make sure you contact the local police.
