Amsterdam is already well known for it’s public transport and the masses of bikes that cruise the streets each day. A city filled with canals, bike lanes, bus lanes and tram lanes. Leaving very little room or allowance for the average car driver. Which is good, unless you live and work in Amsterdam and need to drive around the city centre.
The latest quest for Amsterdam to seek more ECO friendly ways to offer locals and travellers alike a chance to cut down on their carbon footprint was started last week. Fuel cell powered canal boats.
The first of these new breed of boats to grace Amsterdams waterways was ” The NEMO H2″. With the ability to carry 87 passengers and emit nothing but water to power itself along the waterways. The Nemo H2 costs just €0.50 extra than the other canal boats. The extra cents it costs goes into funding research for carbon reducing technology, which can’t be such a bad thing.
The hydrogen fuel cell powered boat costs more than double to build compared to an ordinary canal cruise boat. But with more boats expected to be ordered, the price will surely drop.
The new “CO2 Zero Canal Cruise” is expected to launch and be available for visitors from Spring this coming year. So for any enviromentally conscious travellers to Amsterdam next year. Keep an eye open for the CO2 Zero canal cruise.
