Spending money for Amsterdam

February 12th, 2009 · No Comments

When heading away on holiday it’s always a tough decision to make on how much money to take with you.  If your heading out to Amsterdam then the same thought will no doubt be running your mind, and it should be too as it’s almost as expensive to visit as London.

I’ve managed to speak to alot of different people while away in Amsterdam, so that’s always given me a good idea as to how much money everyone seems to take with them.  The majority of people rely on around €100+ a day, which only covers them for food, drinks and any tourist visits they make. For many of them, it’s also their coffeeshop budget.

There’s two main factors when it comes to how much spending money you’ll need for Amsterdam, Check them out below:

What do you plan on doing while your there?

If you plan on walking around and taking in the sights of Amsterdam such as the beautiful canals, the museums, churches and markets. Then you should take into account that most of the museums cost around €5 for entry.

If your planning on visiting alot of them, plan smart and spend a couple of days visiting them with an IAmsterdam card or a museum card.  It saves money on museum entrances and gets you onto public transport free.

If your plans involve heavy drinking and visiting many of the coffeeshops in Amsterdam, then expect to spend a bit more.

What do you plan on eating?

This is another area where spending money in Amsterdam disappears, and disappears fast!  Food is either cheap or expensive depending on where you go and what you want.

If your looking for fine dining or top notch restaurants, then you’ll either be needing to pull out the plastic or part with some cash.  On the flip side, if your just looking for quick food with no frills. Then Amsterdam has plenty of options when it comes to budget eating.

If anything will zap your cash in Amsterdam, it’s one of those two things.  Transport shouldn’t cost you much at all as Amsterdam is actually alot smaller than it seems.  In fact, in all the visits we’ve ever made to Amsterdam, I’ve only ever been on a tram once i think.  Amsterdam is a beautiful city and seeing it by foot is a definite must for anyone visiting.

If your looking at ways to reduce your spending while in Amsterdam and give you more money for other things,  then here’s a brief Amsterdam money saving guide that i wrote a while ago.  Hopefully you’ll find it useful.
