Our journey starts at Dam Square
We thought that while we were in Amsterdam, we’d give it our best shot at trying to get lost. Now getting lost in Amsterdam is easier than you may think, especially if you keep that map firmly in your pocket and don’t look at it until your well and truly lost.
Amsterdam may seem quite large when your looking at it on a map, but when your actually wandering around the streets you start to notice that something which looks like it would take camels and an entire day to get to on a map. Is just around the corner and no further than a 20 minute walk.
So here’s how we managed to get lost in Amsterdam.
We walked from Dam Square down towards Rokin and then just kept on walking, every time we spotted a street we recognized or thought we’d seen before. We headed right off in the opposite direction to ensure we wouldn’t be walking the same streets over and over again. The map we had in our pocket was only to serve as a guide on our return back to the apartment.
After about 45 minutes of achieving our “lost in Amsterdam” status. We headed into a cafe to take a drink and figure out which way to go next. Turns out Vijzelstraat was our destination. (Not that we knew that of course
).
Vijzelstraat is a long main type road with plenty of places to grab a bite to eat from (and plenty of side streets to help you get lost), We’d only just had some fries not too long ago so we were set to carry on walking. We took one of the canal turnings and figured we’d take in some of the canals before heading back into the crazy world of trams and people.
It only took a few minutes of walking up Keizersgracht to reach Leidsestraat, which is where our “getting lost in Amsterdam” phase ended. We knew where we were plus we were hungry so the Leidseplein with it’s many restaurants and cafes was just perfect for what we needed, and it enabled us to warm up a bit from the icy cold winds outside.
Walking around and trying to get lost in Amsterdam was more fun than it may seem. It’s a refreshing change to be in some part of town thats different and trying to formulate a plan isn’t always the easiest thing to do. But getting lost is extremely good fun from my experience. It’s also a great way to learn your way around the city, it saves some money and you just never know what kind of fun you’ll have, or what you’ll find on your journey.

Final destination is the Leidseplein.
Tip to getting lost in Amsterdam:
Play the left left right game.
The basics are, head off down a street and take a left turn, then another left turn and then finally a right turn. Walk for a bit then repeat. This is sure to get you lost in Amsterdam. (Just make sure you have a map with you incase you get too lost.)
