Amsterdam in January – Cold weather and ways to stay warm.

February 9th, 2009 · No Comments

So while we were Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago, we noticed something about the weather. It was ice cold!  Now i know i should of wrapped up in layers and taken the essentials with me. But we did all that and still suffered at the hands of the freakishly cold weather conditions that January had in store for us.

Apart from being wrapped up warm, there were a few other things we managed to do to keep nice and toasty inside what looked to be mobile sleeping bags.

The walk from Spuistraat to the Leidseplein was the coldest walk we took part in our whole 3 days in Amsterdam, it took us close to an hour to walk the distance but was well worth the relaxing and peaceful evening we achieved.  Even with gloves, scarves and several layers of clothes on, mine and Vikki’s hands were numb with cold and gripping anything was becoming difficult.  We found that heading into several souvenir shops took the edge off the wintry evening and occasionally picking up either a nice cup of hot chocolate or even FEBO fries did the job.

At any point we weren’t holding of those two things, we had hold of each others hands and walked quietly along the canal side looking at the different style houseboats and houses that line the canal banks.  The best time i would say to experience the canal is by evening light, most of the buildings are lit up in an evening and there just seems to be less general noise around.  Ideal for taking a walked with a  loved one.

Another thing aside from visiting the souvenir shops that we did to stay warm, was visiting clothing stores.  Now this might not appeal to some and may not be available due to shopping times for others.  But this is a really great way to see what bargains can be found in Amsterdam as compared to back at home.

Now many of you may be thinking, “Why didn’t you just hop on a tram?” Well the only real answer i have for that is, We wanted to see Amsterdam via foot and take in as much of the city as we could. We had plenty of time to enjoy the walks and although the cold was off putting at times. We made the most of it and tried to work out different ways to stay toasty.

If your walking around in Amsterdam and weather happens to change suddenly on you, don’t hesitate to pick up a cup of hot chocolate or some FEBO fries and walk with them. It’ll keep your fingers warm and help you enjoy a walk in the cold evening air just that little bit more.
