On our most recent trip to Amsterdam, we went ahead and found out exactly how easy it is to get from Amsterdam’s airport (Schiphol) to the centre of Amsterdam (Centraal Station). The result is that it is extremely easy (and cheap) to travel from the airport to the city centre.
Here’s what you need to know:
Airport to Amsterdam.
- Locate train ticket sales in the main plaza area, it’s got a huge sign above it and is easy to spot.
- Purchase ticket for €4.40 (Correct at time of publishing, 04/02/2009 )
- Head on down to the platform that will take you to Amsterdam, if your unsure then ask the person you bought your ticket from.
- Board train and take a seat until you arrive at Central Station, If in doubt ask. Otherwise just hop off the train when everyone else gets off with suitcases and bags. (It’s normally the first stop)
- Arrival at Central Station
Amsterdam to the airport.
- Purchase ticket from ticket sales office at the front of Central station.
- Head upto the platform where your train will arrive (It was at 14a when we were there)
- Board train and take a seat, the ride only lasts for around 20 minutes.
- A voice will come over the tannoy in various languages, This usually means that Schiphol is the next stop so prepare your bags and get ready to get off the train.
- Once off the train, head up the stairs to the main plaza area.
That’s all there is to it. Don’t risk getting in a taxi outside the airport unless you agree a price with the driver first, many taxi touts up the prices to something stupid like €80. The average price is around €30 for a taxi from Amsterdam to the airport, or the other way around.
