6 Tips To Saving Money On Holiday In Amsterdam

January 19th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Save money on Holiday with these tipsWhen on holiday in Amsterdam. It’s hard to try and save money. After all, your unsure of where to buy things from cheap, it’s a tourist location so pretty much everything is over priced and what’s not overpriced just looks unappetising, whether it be one of the local delicacies or a traditional food you just don’t recognize.

There are many different ways to try and save money while on holiday to the amazing and beautiful Amsterdam. From museum and tram savers. To knowing where to shop and what to buy.

Here’s a few popular tips and tricks to save you some money whilst on holiday in Amsterdam:

1.  Buy your food from the supermarket

Buying food from the supermarket is a great way to save yourself a few Euros. As an example, a multipack of Twix costs just €2.09 where as a single Twix from any of the shops will cost you at least a Euro. A 2 litre bottle of Sprite is just €1.42 at the Supermarket.  Anywhere else in town you’ll be lucky if you pay the equivalent to get a 500ml bottle.  Supermarkets can save you a small fortune, especially if you decide to rent an apartment in Amsterdam as you’ll have cooking facilities,a fridge and microwave.

2.  Buy A Museumkaart – Brilliant for museum goers

If you fancy taking a tour round a few of the museums in Amsterdam then consider buying a Museumkaart, especially if you plan a return visit to the city within a year.  The card last for a year and entitles you free entry to 400 museums across the Netherlands, many of which are either in Amsterdam, or close by.  If museums aren’t on your list of things to do or you only have an interest in or two, no need to bother with this card. (Not all museums in Amsterdam are part of the Museumkaart scheme.)

3.  Strippenkaart – If you want to travel by tram, this is for you.

The Strippenkaart will save money for anyone that intends to do alot of travelling by tram.  The Strippenkaart enables you as a strippenkaart holder to travel around the many zones of Amsterdam for just a set price. Get your Strippenkaart and work out how many stamps you need to submit to get to your destination. Strippenkaarts can be bought all over the city. 4. Eating out – Avoid Restaurants/Cafes

Eating out in Amsterdam is where decision making comes into it’s own. “Do you visit the steak house here or back on that other street you just came down?”  “Do we you wait until the Chinese restaurant up the road?” Well the first question to start with is “What do i want to eat?” Making this decision can be where the money saving really comes in.  If you just fancy a something to eat while you walk around, then you could opt to eat at somewhere like FEBO,Pizza Slices,Chipsy King or any of the other takeaways.  For just a  couple of EURO’s you could find yourself eating a mobile snack and still seeing the city.

If you do fancy eating at a restaurant then shop around.  Many of the popular tourist areas such as the Damrak,Dam Sq,Damstraat etc are over priced. Head for some of the smaller streets or if you’ve got time, compare the prices and look around.  There’s always a bargain to be found  when it comes to eating out in Amsterdam.

5. Hotels – Making the Most of it

Making the most of your hotel is one way of saving money that quite a number of us overlook.  If the hotel offers a breakfast of any kind included in the price you paid, take it. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day so you should take 30 minutes for yourself and enjoy it.  While enjoying a bite to eat, plan out your day so you don’t travel back on yourself all the time.  Ask for the staff at the hotel for places to visit and places they would recommend to eat. Sometimes the hotels have vouchers they hand out to their guests, use them. You’ll save a couple of Euro’s and see parts of Amsterdam you might not have thought about.

6. Minicards – Save money and get free stuff just by picking up a card!

If you have a good idea of somewhere you’d like to go or even just an idea of the types of things you’d like to do, then pick up some minicards.  Most of the hotels in Amsterdam have them in a rack on the the wall.  The cards are credit card sized and entitle you to various discounts across the city.  From restaurants and entrances to places. To free gifts and discounts on diamonds.  If the hotel your staying in doesn’t have any minicards, then you can be prepared by visiting their website http://hollandhotlinks.com/ and printing out the hotlinks of your choice.

Thanks, some valuable tips there. I would also add the journey to the list! – I recently visited Amsterdam by ferry from the UK (DFDS) , it was much cheaper than flying and more fun as well!

      Thanks for the comment,

Yeah travelling by Ferry is a great option, especially if your living close to one of the ports that sail to the Netherlands. The only thing i didn’t like about it was the money needed to be spent on food, drinks and any kind of entertainment.

Travelling by ferry to Amsterdam in the summer time is fun, as you can enjoy the late nights and the warmer air.

Hope you find the tips useful for your future visits to Amsterdam.
