Amsterdam becoming even greener (ECO) than before.

Amsterdam is already well known for it’s public transport and the masses of bikes that cruise the streets each day.  A city filled with canals,bike lanes,bus lanes and tram lanes. Leaving very little room or allowance for the average car driver. Which is good, unless you live and work in Amsterdam and need to drive around the city centre.

The latest quest for Amsterdam to seek more ECO friendly ways to offer locals and travellers alike a chance to cut down on their carbon footprint was started last week.  Fuel cell powered canal boats.

Amsterdam Schiphol airport signs deal with IBM worth €24.5 million

With over 47 million passengers in 2007, Amsterdams Schiphol airport is regarded as a one of the busiest airports in the world often dealing with huge amounts of freight and traveller luggage every day.

With the increase in security measures and the delays experienced by many travellers whilst quueing up to get through bag searches.  Schiphol airport have signed a contract to have a range of new security checks put in place.

Ranging from self service kiosks,baggage handling robots and RFID devices, The deal is planned to take into account the growing number of baggage thats expected in years to come.  Making the system somewhat future proof.

Easyjet makes new link to Amsterdam from Robin hood airport.

EasyJet starts new flights to Amsterdam
Easyjet have announced that they’ll be flying to Amsterdam as well as other locations from the Doncaster-Sheffield airport. Known as the Robin Hood airport.

Ecstasy collection stolen in Amsterdam area

Ecstasy PillsA guy in the Amsterdam area (Eerbeek) went to a police station in Amsterdam to report a crime.  Not the usual sort of crime though, this time his rare collection of ecstasy pills were stolen during a burglary.

The collection which the anonymous 46 year old man had collected for over 20 years contained 2,400 ecstasy pills which were kept in coin collecting folders. So the unsuspecting thief probably thought he’d bagged a haul of rare coins.  Instead the thief had taken 2 decades worth of ecstasy and some of the pills are believed to be poisonous.

When attractions become distractions in Amsterdam

With our recent post of how Amsterdam was named in the top 10 places for pickpockets.  I thought it might be helpful or at least eye opening to think of some of the places and some of the attractions pickpocketing may be more likely to happen then you’d think.

With the early evenings at this time of year, there’s plenty of places lit up in Amsterdam that deserve some attention when viewing the sights.  Just make sure that while your taking in the beautiful surroundings the city has,  that someone else is’nt helping themselves to your valuables.
